Scott Sicko will take his ball and go home
From Night Train Lane to Kurt Warner(notes), the NFL has been graced with the talents of many undrafted players who went on to Hall of Fame careers. Often, the snubs are used by the players to drive them to greatness, and the resulting successes are often used as inspirational "anything can happen if you work hard enough" fodder for people in every walk of life. Odds are that of the 2010 undrafted class, a handful of players will go on to make significant differences for their teams and for the league.
Here's one thing we know: Scott Sicko will not be one of them. Sicko, a former New Hampshire tight end, made his position clear -- if he was not drafted, he would not play professional football. This despite definite interest from several teams, including the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Dallas Cowboys, after the draft ended.
"Some people will think I'm absolutely out of my mind, and I understand it," Sicko told Mark McGuire of the Albany Times Union on Saturday night. "I completely see where they're coming from. ... If I were to be drafted I would have had more confidence of a much longer career in the NFL. I have to look at my life and decide what will make me the happiest. And the thing that will make me the happiest now and in the long run is to pursue my education."
The decision to pursue one's education in place of a pro football career is an understandable (and commendable) one. But that doesn't seem to be at the heart of Sicko's decision -- it appears to be more about the prestige of having a draft pick attached to one's name. And that's where the decision seems odd. If Sicko had legitimate NFL potential -- and judging from the way the Cowboys were pursuing him (basically telling him that he'd likely have a roster spot), it seems he did - why should it matter? Do we really think that the guys drafted in the last 10 spots of the seventh round are feeling that much better than the players who were signed as undrafted free agents soon after? Is Sicko upset because he won't get a big to-do like Tim Toone, the 2010 Mr. Irrelevant, will?
There are advantages to the UDFA process -- some players actually prefer to go undrafted if they're not picked up by, say, the late sixth round because they have more choices. If Sicko had been drafted by a team very deep at his position, he may never have received a chance. This way, he could pick and choose the best situation for himself. But now, that will never happen.
Sicko intends to go after a post-graduate degree in history, but one history lesson might do him some good before he closes the book on a potential NFL future. There's a long list of people who have transcended the status he feels he's above, and that's worth considering. He is a big (6-4, 251 pounds) tight end with good speed and productivity at the Colonial Athletic Association level. Why not give the NFL a try, even if it isn't on his terms?

Bret Michaels in critical condition with hemorrhage

Joann Mignano confirmed a report on People magazine's website Friday that said the former Poison frontman was rushed to intensive care late Thursday after a severe headache. The report said doctors discovered bleeding at the base of his brain stem.
Mignano said tests are being conducted and that no further information was available.
The 47-year-old reality TV star had an emergency appendectomy last week after complaining of stomach pains. He said on his website that though the surgery "has taken its toll," doctors expected him to make a full recovery.
Michaels starred on the VH1 dating show "Rock of Love" and is a contestant on Donald Trump's NBC reality show, "The Celebrity Apprentice."
Trump said in a statement Friday that he was "deeply saddened" to hear of Michaels' condition.
"He's a great competitor and champion, and I hope he will be fine,"

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. – A missing 11-year-old central Florida girl with Asperger syndrome was found alive on Tuesday, four days after she disappeared into an alligator-infested swamp a half-mile from her suburban home.
Nadia Bloom was taken to a hospital in nearby Longwood, Fla., where she will be evaluated and treated for dehydration and insect bites, said Winter Springs Police Chief Kevin Brunelle.
"If I never believed in miracles, I sure do now," Brunelle said during an afternoon news conference.
Brunelle said Nadia told rescuers two things: "I'm glad you guys found me" and "I can't believe you guys rescued me."
Her sister has said Bloom, who has an autism-related disorder called Asperger syndrome, may have gone into the dense woods hoping to make a nature video.
It took nearly two hours for rescuers to carry Nadia out of the thick brush and swamp. It wasn't police who located her. James King, who goes to church with Nadia's family, found her Tuesday morning in a dry patch in the middle of the swamp and called authorities.
King climbed a tree and unfurled toilet paper in an attempt to draw attention to where they were.
Brunelle said he dispatched a helicopter to look for King and Nadia, but it didn't work.
Using cell phone signals, authorities found King and Nadia.
"Mr. King is a hero right now," said Brunelle. "He led us to her."
Brunelle added that detectives are questioning both King and Nadia for more details on the rescue and how the little girl spent her time while she was missing.
Brunelle did say that Nadia told them that she had not talked to anyone since going into the woods on Friday.
Authorities began searching for Nadia in wooded areas near Lake Jesup, one of the most alligator-filled lakes in Central Florida. The fifth-grader was last seen riding her bike on Friday, and authorities became alarmed when they found her bike and helmet. She did have a backpack with her.
Shortly after word came that Nadia was alive, her father briefly spoke to the media.
"It all came so fast and it just shows the compassion of the human spirit. It should give everybody encouragement," her father, Jeff Bloom, told reporters after rescue crews lifted her into an ambulance.
When asked how he felt, Bloom said: "I can't even describe it. Let's give the glory to God."

Hall & Oates have always been cool, really, but Philly's blue-eyed soul duo is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance as of late, with the Gym Class Heroes naming one of their treks the "Daryl Hall For President Tour"; Daryl Hall getting artists like KT Tunstall, Chromeo, Diane Birch, and the Gym Class Heroes' Travis McCoy to guest on his online music/talk show, Live From Daryl's House; and Koot Hoomi and Robert Lurie paying homage to the duo on their tribute disc, The Dark Side Of Hall & Oates.
Another act that worships at the pop altar of H&O is the Bird & The Bee (the indie-pop duo of singer-songstress Inara George and Ke$ha/Lily Allen/Flaming Lips/Kylie/Peaches producer Greg Kurstin), who in fact love the '70s/'80s yacht-rockers so much, they've recorded their own full album of H&O covers, Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall & John Oates.
B&B recently brought their H&O tribute to Los Angeles's sold-out El Rey Theater, and they made fans' dreams come true for sure. Inara was rocking a seriously skintight spandex frock and some awesome '80s dance moves despite being nearly eight months pregnant (unable to strap her usual bass guitar over her prominently protruding belly, she employed Beck bassist extraordinaire Justin Meldal-Johnsen). Justin's appearance was cool enough, but the best cameo came when Daryl Hall's better half, John Oates himself, emerged from the stage wings (sans 'stache, but still exciting) to join Inara and Greg on "She's Gone," "Maneater," and "I Can't Go For That."
"I really needed a dose of feelgood tonight," the smiling Oates told the ecstatic audience, referring to his sadness over the recent passing of longtime Hall & Oates bassist T-Bone Wolk (to whom Inara dedicated the entire show). And that feelgood feeling emanated throughout the El Rey as John jammed with the Bird & The Bee on H&O's classic hits.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski and some of the country's highest military and civilian leaders died when the presidential plane crashed as it came in for a landing in thick fog in western Russia today (NZ time), killing 96, officials said.
Russian and Polish officials said there were no survivors on the Soviet-era Tupolev, which was taking the president, his wife and staff to events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.
The Army chief of staff, Gen. Franciszek Gagor, National Bank President Slawomir Skrzypek and Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer were also on board, the Polish foreign ministry said.
Russia's Emergency Ministry said there were 96 dead, 88 part of a Polish state delegation. Poland's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Piotr Paszkowski, said there were 89 people on the passenger list but one person had not shown up.
"We still cannot fully understand the scope of this tragedy and what it means for us in the future. Nothing like this has ever happened in Poland," Paszkowski said. "We can assume with great certainty that all persons on board have been killed."
The governor of the Smolensk region, where the crash took place about 11am (7pm NZ time), also said no one survived.
State news channel Rossiya-24 showed footage from the crash site, with pieces of the plane scattered widely amid leafless trees and small fires burning in woods shrouded with fog. A tail fin with the Polish red and white colors stuck up from the debris.
"The Polish presidential plane did not make it to the runway while landing. Tentative findings indicate that it hit the treetops and fell apart," regional governor Sergei Anufriev said on Rossiya-24. "Nobody has survived the disaster."
The presidential Tu-154 was at least 20 years old. Polish officials have long discussed replacing the planes that carry the country's leaders but said they lacked the funds. According to the Aviation Safety Network, there have been 66 crashes involving Tu-154s, including six in the past five years. The Russian carrier Aeroflot recently withdrew its Tu-154 fleet from service.
Polish-Russian relations had been improving of late after being poisoned for decades over the Katyn massacre.
Russia never has formally apologised for the murders of some 22,000 Polish officers, but Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's decision to attend a memorial ceremony earlier this week in the forest near Katyn was seen as a gesture of goodwill toward reconciliation. Rossiya-24 showed hundreds of people around the Katyn monument, many holding Polish flags, some weeping.

UFC 112 weigh-in: Huge favorites ready to rock
The UFC held the UFC 112 weigh-in at the Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi. All the fighters made weight. Anderson Silva defends his UFC 185 pound title against submission artist Demian Maia while 155 champ B.J. Penn faces Frank Edgar. Silva is a massive favorite at minus-800 while Penn is minus-700.
The weigh-in didn't present too much drama. Rick Story and Nick Osipczak had an intense staredown. Heavyweight Jon Madsen pulled out the dreaded t-shirt weigh in. He's a bad body guy at 6-feet, 252 pounds. That said, it's doesn't mean he's out of shape or in trouble. Renzo Gracie also tried to pull off the shirted weigh in, but eventually showed off his 43-year-old physique. Joe Rogan scolded the crowd in Abu Dhabi for booing Matt Hughes when they began a quick on-stage conversation. Silva and his challenger Demian Maia both went with the "hands on the hips" look during the staredown.
It was also nice to see UFC VP Marc Ratner pull out his Del Boca Vista button down. IT must be hot in Abu Dhabi, Bruce Buffer decided to wear sunglasses on his neck.
